Top Tips for a Safe Holiday

The holiday season is here!  At Mayers Memorial Hospital District we want you to have a safe and happy holiday. There are a few simple tips to follow when decorating, putting up outside lights, preparing meals, and holiday travel.

Decorating:
  • Never use lighted candles near trees, boughs or flammable items.  Possibly opt for the flameless candles.
  • Keep your tree stand filled with water, so it doesn't dry out quickly. Keep the tree away from heat sources.
  • Use indoor lights indoors and outdoor lights outdoors. Check the UL label if you are not sure.
  • Turn off all lights overnight or when you are not home.
  • Do not use more than three stands of lights per extension cord.
Outside Safety:
  • When putting up lights or other decorations use a SAFE ladder. Do not stand on chairs, etc.
  • A straight extension ladder should be placed one foot away from the surface it rests against for every four feet of ladder height.
  • Use ladders with slip resistant feet and wear clean, dry slip resistant shoes.
  • Always keep three points of contact on the ladder - whether 2 hands and one foot or two feet and one hand.
Food Safety:
  • When preparing food always wash  and sanitize kitchen surfaces, hands and cooking equipment.
  • Thaw food in the refrigerator, cold water or the microwave.
  • When reheating - bring the temperature to 165 to eliminate any bacterial growth.
  • Be smart as a holiday host when it comes to alcoholic beverages. Provide options for designated drivers.
Winter Travel:
  • Be prepared for emergency situations by having a winter "survival kit"  in your vehicle. Include items such as flashlight, batteries, first aid kit, reflective triangle, ice scraper, snow brush, wooden matches in a waterproof container, high energy foods, canned foods and can opener, water.
  • Prepare your vehicle for the winter by checking brakes, spark plugs, fluid levels, battery and tires.
  • Make sure someone knows your itinerary and check in with them upon safe arrival.
Have a wonderful Holiday Season!
