Doing so also makes it more likely you’ll be more physically active. After all, unless your idea of enjoying being outdoors is simply sitting in a chair in your backyard, most activities that beckon you outside come with some added physical activity – and that’s good for both your physical and mental well-being.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Studies have shown that while exercise of any type is good for your health, exercise done outside in nature is even better. You’ll get all the health benefits of physical activity, plus you’ll likely find that outdoor exercise helps reduce stress and mental fatigue, improve mood and even raise your self-esteem. As a bonus, you may feel like you’re not working as hard when exercising outdoors, which makes it easier to finish your workout or allows you to stay active longer.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Ready to take advantage of the extra daylight at this time of year (and for months to come)? Stretch before and after, especially if it’s cold out (you may want to do your stretching someplace warm if it’s especially cold). Don’t forget to wear sunscreen. And as always, check with your doctor before starting any new activity, especially if you have chronic health conditions.</p></div>Mayers - Always Caring...Always Herehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13866752536268899633noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2540625943141821955.post-84094053496406481022024-03-11T14:32:00.000-07:002024-03-11T14:32:00.137-07:00How Your Caffeine Addiction Affects Your Health<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj60dRd_2c3zgPlyyRup3hfBcpF1mCTcKu4E2QUWNoYx0DmFQPOgGDXeUGlHiphyysEMCuRAbUicBcJGRhY3ef0W3fA3sfgiC2GqfcJ8E3ke-kaMbP7B6ovNyXKUYdj_bNwiZqDm6jwNews8J-q843bCRwiqMp3H4mvEIXMCna9dThRKq2EvJuaKT83V6J6" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="1280" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj60dRd_2c3zgPlyyRup3hfBcpF1mCTcKu4E2QUWNoYx0DmFQPOgGDXeUGlHiphyysEMCuRAbUicBcJGRhY3ef0W3fA3sfgiC2GqfcJ8E3ke-kaMbP7B6ovNyXKUYdj_bNwiZqDm6jwNews8J-q843bCRwiqMp3H4mvEIXMCna9dThRKq2EvJuaKT83V6J6" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p></p><div class="BWB_item_fulltext_h2" style="box-sizing: border-box !important; font-family: Poppins, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 19.2px !important; font-weight: bold !important; letter-spacing: 0.5px; margin: 24px 0px !important; text-align: justify !important;">Here’s what the caffeine in your daily cup or two (or three!) of coffee or tea is doing to your body.</div><div class="BWB_item_fulltext" style="box-sizing: border-box !important; font-family: Poppins, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; letter-spacing: 0.5px;"><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Your morning cup o’ Joe may be something you can’t imagine starting your day without. Maybe you can’t live without an afternoon pick-me-up that’s fully caffeinated. If you make caffeinated drinks part of your everyday routine, you may be wondering if all that caffeine is good or bad, or whether it has much impact on your health at all.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Research shows that low to moderate amounts of caffeine may offer health benefits. A moderate level is considered to be less than 400 mg, which is the amount found in about four to five cups of coffee. Some studies indicate that regular consumption of caffeinated coffee may be associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, endometrial cancer, gallstones, liver cancer and gallbladder cancer.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Caffeine may also increase energy, alertness and the ability to concentrate and remember things. Since caffeine boosts the flow of dopamine, a feel-food brain chemical, it may make you feel happier and may even lower your risk of depression.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">But higher doses of caffeine may have negative effects on health. If you consume too much caffeine, it may speed up your heart rate. There is no solid evidence that this will cause an increase in blood pressure or cause arrhythmias, irregular heart rhythms. However, many cardiologists recommend that patients with these conditions limit or avoid caffeine.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Pregnant women should also consider limiting or eliminating caffeine from their diet since caffeine passes through the placenta into the fetus. You may not need to give up all caffeine if you’re pregnant, but most obstetricians recommend limiting intake to under 200 mg per day.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Caffeinated drinks may cause some people to have heartburn or it may increase symptoms of acid reflux. It may also contribute to dehydration since caffeine is considered a diuretic. So if your daily fluid intake is caffeinated, you’re likely not doing much to hydrate your body.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Although research suggests that a moderate intake of caffeine may be safe for most people, some people cannot tolerate that much caffeine. Drinking more caffeine than can be tolerated may cause symptoms such as agitation, anxiety, restlessness, jitteriness, shakiness or dizziness. You may get headaches, your heart may feel like it’s racing or you may have trouble sleeping.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Not sure what 400 mg of caffeine equates to depending on what you drink? Here’s a list of some popular beverages and approximately how much caffeine they contain:</p><ul style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px 0px 0px 40px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Brewed coffee (8 oz) – 96 mg</li><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Espresso (1 oz) – 64 mg</li><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Black tea (8 oz) – 47 mg</li><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Green tea (8 oz) – 28 mg</li><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Cola-flavored soda (8 oz) – 22 mg</li><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Energy drink (8 oz) – 72 mg</li></ul><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">The choice to drink caffeinated beverages or stick to decaf is a personal choice. If you have health conditions, talk to your doctor about whether caffeine is something you should limit or avoid. Otherwise, only you can decide where the tipping point is between just the right amount of caffeine to get you going and a bit too much.</p></div>Mayers - Always Caring...Always Herehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13866752536268899633noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2540625943141821955.post-76305197845232792802024-03-07T14:31:00.000-08:002024-03-07T14:31:54.944-08:00In Your 40’s? It can save your life!</div><div class="BWB_item_fulltext" style="box-sizing: border-box !important; font-family: Poppins, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; letter-spacing: 0.5px;"><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the United States, excluding skin cancers. It’s also the second leading cause of cancer death. You won’t always have symptoms of colorectal cancer, especially at its earlier stages, so screening tests are the best way to check for this very serious disease.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">When should I begin screening for colorectal cancer?</strong></p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Up until recently, it was recommended that adults begin screenings for colorectal cancer starting at age 50. But due to rising rates of colorectal cancer in people under the age of 50, the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force lowered screening age recommendations in 2021. They now suggest that adults at average risk for colorectal cancer begin screening at age 45. Some people may need to start screening younger than 45 if they are at an increased risk. Talk to your doctor about what’s right for you.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">How are colorectal cancer screenings done?</strong></p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">The gold standard of colorectal cancer screening is a colonoscopy. This test is performed by inserting a thin flexible tube with a small camera into the rectum and through the colon, allowing doctors to check for polyps, tumors and other abnormalities. If polyps are found, they can be removed during the test. This is an important protection against colorectal cancer, because some polyps may become cancerous in the future.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Another test that is similar to a colonoscopy is a flexible sigmoidoscopy. This test is also done by inserting a thin tube into your rectum with a camera, but it only covers the sigmoid colon and does not go as far as a colonoscopy. However, the prep and the procedure itself may be easier for some people to tolerate.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Other non-invasive screening tests are also available to check for the possibility of colorectal cancer. They are easier to perform, but are not as definitive as colonoscopies. These tests, including fecal occult blood tests (FOBT), fecal immunochemical tests (FIT) and Cologuard, look for blood or abnormal DNA in the stool. The tests are not 100 percent accurate but are an option for people who don’t want to or can’t have a colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy performed. Keep in mind, however, that negative tests may miss possible cancers. But having the condition doesn’t mean your heart no longer works – it means it’s not working as well as it should. With proper medical treatment and lifestyle changes, the effects of heart failure can typically be managed so people can continue to live full and enjoyable lives.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">What is heart failure?</strong></p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">In people who have heart failure, the heart isn’t pumping as well as it should due to a weakened pumping ability or because the walls of the heart have become thicker. That means that the heart can’t supply enough oxygen- and nutrient-rich blood to cells throughout the body. The heart may become enlarged or the heart may pump faster to try to keep up with the body’s demand for blood.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">What are the signs that you may have heart failure?</strong></p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Here are some of the most common symptoms of heart failure. You may not experience these symptoms during early stages of heart failure as your heart and body compensate for the heart’s inability to pump blood efficiently enough. That’s why it’s a good idea to get regular check-ups. If you have any of these symptoms, talk to your doctor because diagnosis and treatment is the best way to manage heart failure:</p><ol style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style-image: initial !important; list-style-position: initial !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px 0px 0px 40px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Shortness of breath</strong> – You may be short of breath during activity or even at rest. After all, in movies and on television, people having heart attacks often clutch their chests as their faces show them experiencing sudden and excruciating pain. Then they theatrically fall to the ground. But in real life, a heart attack is rarely that dramatic and the symptoms may be far less obvious.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Instead of ignoring any symptoms you have because they don’t conjure up Oscar-worthy performances of what you think a heart attack should look like, here are the more likely signs that you may be having a heart attack. If you experience these symptoms, take them seriously and seek medical help right away.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Real-Life Signs of a Heart Attack</strong></p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Heart attack symptoms may be severe, but they may also be mild and subtle. In some cases, a person may not even realize they’re having a heart attack. Here are signs to look out for:</p><ul style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px 0px 0px 40px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Chest pressure or tightness.</strong> Some people describe this feeling as if an elephant is sitting on their chest.</li><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Pain on the left side of the body.</strong> You may experience pain in your chest that radiates down your left arm or into the left side of your jaw. Do not drive yourself to the hospital, however. Even if you think you feel well enough to drive, your symptoms may get worse on the way. Instead, call 911 or have someone drive you to the emergency room immediately.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Can you have a heart attack and not know it?</strong></p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">It is possible to have a heart attack and not even know you had it. When this happens, it may be because it is a mild heart attack that doesn’t cause any noticeable symptoms. But more often there are subtle symptoms that occur that may not be attributed to a heart attack so medical treatment is not sought. Sometimes a person may realize the symptoms they’re feeling could be due to a heart attack but they decide to ignore their symptoms, hoping they’ll just go away.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Any heart attack, no matter how minor, may cause damage to the heart so it is important to not ignore symptoms. Although radon testing isn’t required by law, it’s highly recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), so most home sales don’t proceed until radon levels are checked. The EPA and the U.S. Surgeon General also recommend regular testing for radon in every home.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">But what is radon and why should we test for it? Here are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about radon.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">What is radon?</strong></p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Radon is a radioactive gas. It’s caused by the breakdown of uranium in the soil, rock and water below the Earth’s surface. The gas is completely odorless, colorless and tasteless. Radon occurs naturally outdoors, but it dissipates into the air. When it gets into our homes, however, it gets trapped, and we breathe it in without realizing it.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">How does radon get in the house?</strong></p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Radon can seep into our homes through any openings – through cracks in the walls or floors, gaps in the foundation, construction joints and the openings around pipes, wires and pumps. Radon levels are usually the highest in crawl spaces and basements, since they’re normally below ground level. With homes being sealed up more tightly during the colder months, any radon gas that seeps into the house becomes trapped.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Why are high levels of radon so dangerous?</strong></p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">When we breathe in radioactive radon gas, it goes directly to our lungs. The radiation can damage the lining of the lungs, increasing our risk of lung cancer. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in nonsmokers, responsible for an estimated 20,000 lung cancer deaths per year, according to the American Cancer Society®. Although there are no specific symptoms of radon exposure, symptoms of possible lung cancer include shortness of breath, a cough that keeps getting worse, tightness in the chest, hoarseness or trouble swallowing. See your doctor if you experience these symptoms.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">But isn’t radon only a problem in old houses with basements and only found in certain areas of the country?</strong></p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Radon gas can be present in any home, old or new. It doesn’t matter if the home is sealed up tight or very drafty, or whether there’s a basement or not. Even brand new houses built with radon-resistant features can have higher than normal levels of radon. Although some areas of the country are more likely to have higher levels of radon than others, radon can be found in homes in every state.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">How can I find out if my home has high levels of radon?</strong></p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">There are a number of special tests available for determining if your home has a radon level higher than 4 pCI/L (4 picocuries per liter). You can purchase a do-it-yourself kit for about $30 or a radon detector for about $100. You can also hire a professional radon measurement specialist, which is what the EPA recommends.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">What can I do if there are elevated radon levels in my home?</strong></p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Radon levels in the home can be reduced in several ways. Some methods try to prevent more radon from entering in the first place. For instance, soil suction draws out radon from underneath the house and vents it out into the air. Other techniques work to reduce high levels of radon that are already trapped inside. These include fans, additional ventilation and the sealing of cracks. The National Radon Safety Board (nrsb.org) maintains a searchable database of certified radon specialists in your area who can help.</p></div></div>Mayers - Always Caring...Always Herehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13866752536268899633noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2540625943141821955.post-60196692518124539272024-01-22T08:03:00.000-08:002024-01-22T08:03:00.136-08:00These Exercises Help Reduce Back Pain<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjqNVoxG3nwaaUffyhgHTnxXmElfOxp_DuFR3jrmSv8z-cLEig7LxYbB-RLMb9qph2ZJVQPcbT8w8XxKGXcxFgtxtc56sY0t4sXr8bgEj4WdtnZkw__YjxmJLvUFQIDv7FftywoLCQ6BCzRCiYvbT7XQoPvyXUzgInGjeC-C-gDmsrP_60-oVB84d3p4cVs" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="719" data-original-width="1280" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjqNVoxG3nwaaUffyhgHTnxXmElfOxp_DuFR3jrmSv8z-cLEig7LxYbB-RLMb9qph2ZJVQPcbT8w8XxKGXcxFgtxtc56sY0t4sXr8bgEj4WdtnZkw__YjxmJLvUFQIDv7FftywoLCQ6BCzRCiYvbT7XQoPvyXUzgInGjeC-C-gDmsrP_60-oVB84d3p4cVs" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p></p><div class="BWB_item_fulltext_h2" style="box-sizing: border-box !important; font-family: Poppins, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 19.2px !important; font-weight: bold !important; letter-spacing: 0.5px; margin: 24px 0px !important; text-align: justify !important;">Strengthening your core may be the key to preventing back pain. Here's how to do it.</div><div class="BWB_item_fulltext" style="box-sizing: border-box !important; font-family: Poppins, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; letter-spacing: 0.5px;"><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Back pain affects almost every adult person at some point in their lives. You’re more likely to experience back pain as you age and lose flexibility. You’re also more at risk of developing pain in your back if you are overweight or are not very active. But even if back pain is something you can’t completely avoid, one of the best ways to alleviate it is under your control.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Strengthening your core muscles is a great defense against back pain. Your core muscles include a series of muscles that wrap around your abdomen and support your spine. You may think that you only need to strengthen these muscles if you want six-pack abs, but there’s a lot more to core muscles than just making you look ripped.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">How do you strengthen your core muscles?</strong></p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">You don’t need fancy equipment or a gym membership to strengthen your core. Many core-strengthening exercises can be done with nothing but your body weight. Some popular core exercises include planks, sit-ups, crunches and bridges. If you do these exercises two to three times a week, you’ll be on your way to developing a stronger core.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">When you perform any type of exercise while keeping your core stable and engaged you’re also strengthening these muscles. So whether you’re lifting weights or running, you are also strengthening your core. In fact, since your core muscles are needed for almost any type of movement you make, virtually every exercise can be considered a core exercise if done right.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Why do core muscles help with back pain?</strong></p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Your core muscles are located deep within your abdomen and back, attaching to the spine, hips and pelvis. When you perform almost any type of movement, it is powered by these muscles. Whether you are sitting, standing, bending, reaching, walking or jumping, your core muscles are used to make the movement happen. Strengthening these muscles makes it less likely that you’ll experience pain in your lower back because stronger core muscles make movements smoother and more effective. They also reduce the chance of injury.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">What other benefits do strong core muscles offer?</strong></p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">In addition to reducing back pain, stronger core muscles improve your stability and balance. This is needed if you play sports, but it is equally important for everyday life because it makes it less likely you’ll fall. A stronger core also makes it easier for you to perform all types of activities, from bending down to tie your shoes to reaching up to grab something off a high shelf. Additionally, a strong core helps improve your posture.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Not only do stronger core muscles help reduce back pain, but they may also alleviate pain in other areas of your body, including the neck, hips and knees. A strong core may even help prevent issues like incontinence since it affects movement within your pelvis.</p></div>Mayers - Always Caring...Always Herehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13866752536268899633noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2540625943141821955.post-11532470132426660902024-01-15T08:01:00.000-08:002024-01-15T08:01:00.133-08:00If You Have These Symptoms, Get Your Thyroid Checked<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiL1vZWeMdmioCVpAyqbw_Xn4d6_uSPrWODW5tl_B9VFVst9NiKv8crJ2G0-NiPdfVFgClmHjXkdQDE0K7sTm1FIjinXQaWI6avBNt7PweCfqsHJTwITJS6Wtu7xUJYtCfs2W_MveVhXEKKOYBlH9Wi8paCvd2jHUrOihvsTtzVPaxT_WxODtnWpcmsQxtw" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="1280" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiL1vZWeMdmioCVpAyqbw_Xn4d6_uSPrWODW5tl_B9VFVst9NiKv8crJ2G0-NiPdfVFgClmHjXkdQDE0K7sTm1FIjinXQaWI6avBNt7PweCfqsHJTwITJS6Wtu7xUJYtCfs2W_MveVhXEKKOYBlH9Wi8paCvd2jHUrOihvsTtzVPaxT_WxODtnWpcmsQxtw" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p></p><div class="BWB_item_fulltext_h2" style="box-sizing: border-box !important; font-family: Poppins, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 19.2px !important; font-weight: bold !important; letter-spacing: 0.5px; margin: 24px 0px !important; text-align: justify !important;">Here are 7 common symptoms of an overactive or underactive thyroid.</div><div class="BWB_item_fulltext" style="box-sizing: border-box !important; font-family: Poppins, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; letter-spacing: 0.5px;"><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Your thyroid is a small gland located at the base of your neck that plays a large role in many bodily functions. Its main role is to produce thyroid hormone, which impacts everything from your metabolism to your mood. When your thyroid is not working properly, two things can happen – either you produce too much thyroid hormone (known as hyperthyroidism) or you don’t produce enough thyroid hormone (known as hypothyroidism).</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Whether overactive or underactive, you may notice a number of symptoms that can clue you into the fact that you have a problem with your thyroid. Not everyone has the same symptoms, however, and those with mild cases of thyroid disease may experience no symptoms at all. But if you suspect that your thyroid is not working properly, talk to your doctor.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Consider getting your thyroid checked if you have these symptoms:</p><ul style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px 0px 0px 40px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Your weight unexpectedly changes.</strong> If you have lost or gained a significant amount of weight without changing your diet or exercise habits, it could be related to your thyroid. If your thyroid is overactive, excess thyroid hormone speeds up your metabolism and results in unexpected weight loss. If your thyroid is underactive, your thyroid doesn’t produce enough of this hormone, causing your metabolism to slow down. This may result in unintended weight gain.</li><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">You feel tired or weak.</strong> Whether your thyroid is underactive or overactive, you may notice that you feel tired and weak. If overactive, you may find it hard to fall asleep at night, leaving you feeling unrested. Without enough thyroid hormone, you may feel completely zapped of energy. With both conditions, you may also experience muscle weakness.</li><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">You feel too hot or too cold.</strong> Thyroid problems can also wreak havoc on your sensitivity to temperature. People with hyperthyroidism often feel hot and sweat excessively, while the opposite is true of people with hypothyroidism – they tend to feel cold and find it hard to warm up.</li><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">You notice swelling and inflammation in your body.</strong> If your thyroid is not functioning optimally, you may have inflammation in your joints or may notice it in other places. A simple blood test can diagnose the condition so you’ll know if your thyroid is what is causing your symptoms.</p></div>Mayers - Always Caring...Always Herehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13866752536268899633noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2540625943141821955.post-17987366317953273052024-01-08T08:00:00.000-08:002024-01-08T08:00:00.251-08:00Why Reducing Your Debt Can Improve Your Health<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhCMSsjNojYJCYpH_yG6a4O_YhuOwn_VZmfA5S7hZFp0BCWDOjinZmUvXFFoJ16n0xPD3NIJEv-fMdIwCwT9JZdt4IcMWiHQcA6bbzuOsdlkR5_o3UfNVFPy4WVI7Ff-IzwDEDZ4njYY9nWnie56UGZdKdiLktlcn9gNKkS27yboRf6Z6RNG_SDjFnS0EGI" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="721" data-original-width="1280" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhCMSsjNojYJCYpH_yG6a4O_YhuOwn_VZmfA5S7hZFp0BCWDOjinZmUvXFFoJ16n0xPD3NIJEv-fMdIwCwT9JZdt4IcMWiHQcA6bbzuOsdlkR5_o3UfNVFPy4WVI7Ff-IzwDEDZ4njYY9nWnie56UGZdKdiLktlcn9gNKkS27yboRf6Z6RNG_SDjFnS0EGI" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p><br /></p><div class="BWB_item_fulltext_h2" style="box-sizing: border-box !important; font-family: Poppins, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 19.2px !important; font-weight: bold !important; letter-spacing: 0.5px; margin: 24px 0px !important; text-align: justify !important;">The stress of financial debt may have these effects that go far beyond your wallet.</div><div class="BWB_item_fulltext" style="box-sizing: border-box !important; font-family: Poppins, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; letter-spacing: 0.5px;"><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Feeling the burden of financial stress these days? Worrying about how you are going to pay your rent, auto loan and credit card bill? If you are struggling to make ends meet or you carry a lot of debt, you may be experiencing chronic stress. Depending on how you handle that stress, your financial debt may be significantly impacting your health.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Many people find it stressful when they carry a lot of debt or have other financial stressors. It can be quite a burden when you always have to think about how you’re going to be able to pay your bills each month. If finances are tight, having to make difficult decisions based on what you can or cannot afford can increase stress even more.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">This stress can wreak havoc on not only your mental health, but your physical health, too. One <a href="https://news.northwestern.edu/stories/2013/08/high-debt-could-be-hazardous-to-your-health" rel="noopener" style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; color: rgb(124, 195, 57) !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;" target="_blank">study from Northwestern University</a> looked at the health impact on young adults (ages 24 to 32) of having a high debt-to-asset ratio. This ratio compares what you owe, such as loans and recurring expenses like rent, to how much money you have saved or earn regularly.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">The study found that people with higher debt-to-asset ratios had higher diastolic blood pressure, which increases the risk of hypertension and stroke. They also had more perceived stress and depression and reported that their general health was worse than those with lower debt-to-asset ratios.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Not only can stress raise your blood pressure and negatively impact your mental health, but chronic stress has been associated with a number of health issues, including headaches, digestive problems, sleep disturbances, muscle tension, weight gain, difficulty with memory and focus, heart disease, high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke and susceptibility to some cancers.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Tips for Lowering Stress by Reducing Debt</strong></p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Taking steps to lower the amount of debt you have can go a long way in reducing a major stressor in your life, but it’s not always easy to do so. There are various websites, apps and organizations that can help you develop a budget and can give you tools that make it easier to stick to it. Each person’s financial situation and tolerance for what they can live without is different, but here are a few general tips that may help:</p><ul style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px 0px 0px 40px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">List all of your debt, including how much you owe, what rate you are paying and any other pertinent details.</li><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Consider consolidating or refinancing your debt, ideally with a lower interest rate.</li><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Try to negotiate with your debtors to settle for less than you owe.</li><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Add an extra payment each month or year to shorten your payoff time.</li><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Make a list of all of your expenses and think about which ones you can live without. If so, you’re not alone. Millions of people set out on January 1st with big plans and high expectations. But even those with the best of intentions often struggle to keep resolutions very long.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">According to a study by the University of Scranton, only about 8% of people actually achieve their New Year's resolutions. Although you will be among good company if you don’t reach your goals, it feels much better to actually be successful at making positive changes in your life. So if you're serious about making a New Year's resolution that lasts, here are a few secrets that can help.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">When deciding what your resolution will be, make it:</p><ul style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px 0px 0px 40px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Meaningful.</strong> Don't just choose a resolution because it's what everyone else is doing or because you think it's something you should do. Your resolution should be something you truly want to achieve.</li><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Realistic.</strong> Don't try to change too much at once. Start with one small, achievable goal. Once you've achieved that goal, you can set another one.</li><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Positive.</strong> Focus on what you want to achieve, rather than what you want to avoid. Your direction is more important than your speed.</li><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Celebrate your successes.</strong> When you reach a goal, no matter how small it may be, take time to celebrate your success. There are indulgent foods we look forward to eating only at this time of the year. We may also spend our days and nights at more parties, dinners and get-togethers, where food and drink are abundant. That’s why it should come as no surprise that many people gain a few pounds between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">While temptation may certainly be greater at this time of year, there’s no reason to throw your commitment to healthy eating out the window during the holiday season. There’s also no reason to deprive yourself of the foods you love. The key to sticking to a healthy eating plan and not gaining weight is to embrace moderation and mindfulness. These tips can also help:</p><ol style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style-image: initial !important; list-style-position: initial !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px 0px 0px 40px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Be selective.</strong> There will be lots of food at parties and dinners, but there’s no need to eat everything. Eat what you love or don’t get to enjoy regularly and leave the rest behind.</li><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Take a taste.</strong> Instead of depriving yourself of foods you really want, take a small serving and savor the flavor. Just remind yourself that the first bite is always the best bite.</li><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Step away.</strong> Standing or sitting next to a table full of food can make it more likely you’ll reach for more. Get up, move away and engage in conversation so your main focus is not on the food.</li><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Don’t arrive hungry.</strong> You’re more likely to overeat or make poor food decisions if you are hungry. Eat a small snack before you arrive that includes a mix of protein, complex carbohydrates and healthy fat.</li><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Watch your liquid calories.</strong> Not only do the calories in alcoholic drinks add up quickly, but you may be more likely to abandon your healthy eating plans after a few cocktails. Have a glass of water or seltzer between drinks to keep alcohol consumption in check.</li><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Eat slowly.</strong> It takes some time for your brain to get the signal that your stomach is full. With so much to do, it’s easy for the holidays to become a source of stress rather than the most wonderful time of the year.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">So how can you keep things merry and bright? Finding ways to ease stress can go a long way in upping your enjoyment of this festive time of year. Doing so not only makes your heart happier, but it may keep it healthier, too. That’s because stress is bad for your heart. Here are 7 tips to stress less so you and your heart can get the most out of the holidays:</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Get Organized</strong></p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">You don’t have to start doing Christmas shopping in July, but start your planning early. Make a list of people to buy gifts for, plan your holiday dinner menu or begin addressing holiday cards. Anything that makes you feel organized will help put your mind at ease going into the holiday season.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Don’t Overbook Your Calendar</strong></p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">There’s no need to drive yourself crazy trying to attend every dinner party and cookie exchange you’re invited to. Decide which events are most important to you and plan to see everyone else in January when your calendar is more open. Don’t choose obligations over your own sanity.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Maintain Healthy Habits</strong></p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">With all the shopping, baking and celebrating, it’s easy to get out of your usual healthy routine. But those healthy habits are important for preventing illness and fighting stress. Take a daily walk. Eat your fruits and vegetables. Get enough sleep. And follow the tips in this list to stay as stress-free as possible.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Spend Smarter</strong></p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Exchanging presents during the holidays doesn’t have to mean blowing your budget for the year. If you have a large family, suggest a pollyana or white elephant gift exchange so everyone only has to buy for one person. You’ll have a much happier New Year if you don’t start it off in debt.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Take Time for Yourself</strong></p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">The holidays often include a long to-do list that doesn’t seem to disappear until January 2. As busy as you may be, take at least 15 minutes each day to decompress. Ignore your phone, turn on some music and empty your mind. Afterwards you’ll be recharged and ready to tackle the next project on your list.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Keep It Simple</strong></p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Unreasonable expectations can make the holidays fall flat. Instead of trying to make everything perfect, take time to enjoy the little things. Keep holiday decorations simple and make one batch of cookies instead of the usual six. You’ll likely find more joy when you do less rather than more.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Make it Your Holiday</strong></p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">The holidays aren’t just about pleasing everyone else – you should enjoy them, too. Whatever your favorite tradition may be, whether it’s looking at holiday light displays, watching a classic holiday film or drinking hot cocoa by the fire, make time to enjoy it this holiday season. You deserve it!</p></div>Mayers - Always Caring...Always Herehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13866752536268899633noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2540625943141821955.post-37595826137642936602023-12-11T11:41:00.000-08:002023-12-11T11:41:00.127-08:00The Healthy Travel Guide<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjpQymDQSq6iS4oVaqba26ajV0I-smpFsJYSdCWMSMXDX2I7eezOHDUMcHJ1gjv5jq5uN1vivgKf9Q7Fvc9fRpISboo5xg5F2XD_kjdI1s6_acL_8QJ14nJuSWaEcS-NWuFsmHUHiv19h8sYgi-zMsJXQhUkDO_F2CKcBJsSTNJwsj_V2T83dSgRAmGkWUt" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="1280" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjpQymDQSq6iS4oVaqba26ajV0I-smpFsJYSdCWMSMXDX2I7eezOHDUMcHJ1gjv5jq5uN1vivgKf9Q7Fvc9fRpISboo5xg5F2XD_kjdI1s6_acL_8QJ14nJuSWaEcS-NWuFsmHUHiv19h8sYgi-zMsJXQhUkDO_F2CKcBJsSTNJwsj_V2T83dSgRAmGkWUt" width="320" /></a></div><p></p><div class="BWB_item_fulltext_h2" style="box-sizing: border-box !important; font-family: Poppins, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 19.2px !important; font-weight: bold !important; letter-spacing: 0.5px; margin: 24px 0px !important; text-align: justify !important;">Before you pack your bags, read these tips so you’re more likely to stay healthy during your travels.</div><p></p><div class="BWB_item_fulltext" style="box-sizing: border-box !important; font-family: Poppins, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; letter-spacing: 0.5px;"><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Traveling can be a great way to see the world or visit family and friends. The main reason for this is that women typically live longer than men and age is the biggest risk factor for the disease. But it may not be the only reason why.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">There is not enough definitive research to explain the differences in Alzheimer’s and dementia risk in women other than living longer, but some other factors that affect risk may be at play. For example, educational opportunities, genetics and experiencing traumatic brain injuries may affect risk. Women are more vulnerable to concussion, and for reasons not yet fully understood, gene variants that affect dementia risk appear to have a greater effect on women than men.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Stroke</strong></p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Another brain-related condition that affects women differently than men is stroke. Although many think of stroke as something that primarily happens to older men, the fact is that more women die from strokes each year than men. One reason that women are more likely to have strokes over their lifetimes is that women generally live longer than men and age is a risk factor for this condition.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">In addition to universal risk factors for stroke that affect both genders, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, age and family history, women also have additional risk factors for stroke. There are over 100 autoimmune diseases, but some of the more common ones include lupus, celiac disease, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis and psoriasis. When it comes to autoimmune disorders, women are four times more likely to develop one of these diseases than men. It is not known exactly why women are at such a greater risk, but some theories include differences in sex hormones, the x chromosome, the microbiome and environmental factors.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">If you are a woman, discuss your risks for these three conditions with your doctor. Just because women may be more likely to experience certain diseases doesn’t mean you’re automatically at a high risk just because of your gender. Often there are steps you can take to lower your risk for these conditions, as well as other serious diseases.</p></div>Mayers - Always Caring...Always Herehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13866752536268899633noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2540625943141821955.post-89432953775393214132023-11-20T11:47:00.001-08:002023-11-20T11:47:00.147-08:00How to Save 1,000 Calories at Your Thanksgiving Meal<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEga456gdDRDvsz2KHugrzyDK9bnxwWshwt5kcnskj_MXPsPX-8SOpURoW7BMMDVz99XoZvfpLTSpkg9P3jvs-RMWTuiXiQUIjNDUqPQMwBzCfXi1d6kY3PiZxBGuQJn3FDC5FV9lscp3sl3tcT0avvNGZZPIes-YWrEcuxR9Tv4xLoXFBQ6Q8A6M15HNhTn" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="1280" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEga456gdDRDvsz2KHugrzyDK9bnxwWshwt5kcnskj_MXPsPX-8SOpURoW7BMMDVz99XoZvfpLTSpkg9P3jvs-RMWTuiXiQUIjNDUqPQMwBzCfXi1d6kY3PiZxBGuQJn3FDC5FV9lscp3sl3tcT0avvNGZZPIes-YWrEcuxR9Tv4xLoXFBQ6Q8A6M15HNhTn" width="320" /></a></div><p></p><div class="BWB_item_fulltext_h2" style="box-sizing: border-box !important; font-family: Poppins, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 19.2px !important; font-weight: bold !important; letter-spacing: 0.5px; margin: 24px 0px !important; text-align: justify !important;">The average American consumes over 2,000 calories on Thanksgiving. This screening test can identify cancer in the lungs long before a person experiences any symptoms. Not everyone is eligible to receive this screening, but the US Preventive Services Task Force has put together a set of guidelines to determine who should get an annual low-dose CT scan. Criteria for screening includes:</p><ul style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px 0px 0px 40px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Being between the ages of 50 and 80 years old</li><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Being a current smoker or having quit smoking within the past 15 years</li><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Having a 20 pack-year smoking history</li><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Not having a health problem that limits life expectancy or the ability to have surgery if cancer is found</li></ul><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">To determine your pack-year smoking history, multiply how many packs of cigarettes you smoked per day by the number of years you smoked. For example, if you smoked one pack a day for 20 years, you would have a 20-pack-year smoking history. If you smoked two packs a day for 15 years, you would have a 30-pack-year smoking history.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Is there any other way to detect lung cancer besides a low-dose CT scan?</strong></p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Currently, this screening is the only one that is recommended as being effective for detecting lung cancer early. And is there a particular type of exercise that is better at getting the job done?</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">It turns out that any kind of exercise at any time of day aids in the management of type 2 diabetes. But a recent <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2667036423000018?via%3Dihub" rel="noopener" style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; color: rgb(124, 195, 57) !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;" target="_blank">study</a> published in the American Journal of Medicine indicates that physical activity may be most effective at reducing blood glucose and improving insulin sensitivity if it is done later in the day, especially after meals. Several other studies have also shown that exercising after meals is a great way to help manage spikes in blood sugar that occur after eating.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Even if you can’t fit in a workout after dinner, consider getting in some physical activity later in the day, whenever it’s most convenient. Whether it happens before or after a meal, and in the afternoon or evening, the most important thing is that you find time to fit it in.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">You don’t need to set aside a big chunk of time to get in an effective workout. Getting small bits of activity in throughout the day is just as effective and may significantly improve blood sugar. Aim for 10 – 15 minutes at a time if you can’t get in a full 30-minute or more workout. Even 5 minutes of activity helps. Take the stairs, march in place or do some body-resistance exercises. It all counts.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">When it comes to the types of exercise that are good for managing diabetes, there’s no single “best” exercise. A combination of cardio, strength training and flexibility exercises is best. Each of these helps with many aspects of overall health, from keeping the heart healthy and helping with weight management to maintaining muscle mass and improving balance. They all help with glucose control, although cardio and strength training offers a slight edge over flexibility exercises in this regard.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Another benefit to mixing up the exercise you do is that it keeps things interesting. Doing the same thing day after day can get boring, which may lead some people to skip workouts. Instead of getting into an exercise rut, why not consider switching things up a bit? For example, do strength training exercises twice a week and spend another day or two doing yoga or tai chi. Then walk, bike or swim on other days. Taking an after-dinner walk, either as your primary form of daily exercise or even on days you do other activities, offers an added boost to help control blood sugar.</p></div>Mayers - Always Caring...Always Herehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13866752536268899633noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2540625943141821955.post-56297927855710427882023-10-09T10:00:00.001-07:002023-10-09T10:00:00.152-07:00Why You May Need These 3 Vaccines This Year<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhCUryjprDFkb9GJp4Z4AYQNj891p1dGF9nl-ZUPQ5Y7gI3MvXKMpc0reKNfq1lM796I3_ChaDrksL2Kyq_jDpVb4GcNduP3yQWvCaECsmb7AbDbEJOxXvDzkaQsicn5bwhitou8Yh6o4ZNZSQwSga0hjYqHwrYNUpOqpYpvjc9s2E6O3RAeZFHmCqdPl7T" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="1280" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhCUryjprDFkb9GJp4Z4AYQNj891p1dGF9nl-ZUPQ5Y7gI3MvXKMpc0reKNfq1lM796I3_ChaDrksL2Kyq_jDpVb4GcNduP3yQWvCaECsmb7AbDbEJOxXvDzkaQsicn5bwhitou8Yh6o4ZNZSQwSga0hjYqHwrYNUpOqpYpvjc9s2E6O3RAeZFHmCqdPl7T" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p></p><div class="BWB_item_fulltext_h2" style="box-sizing: border-box !important; font-family: Poppins, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 19.2px !important; font-weight: bold !important; letter-spacing: 0.5px; margin: 24px 0px !important; text-align: justify !important;">Getting vaccinated against common viruses may keep you from getting sick this fall and winter.</div><div class="BWB_item_fulltext" style="box-sizing: border-box !important; font-family: Poppins, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; letter-spacing: 0.5px;"><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">When fall rolls around, many doctors recommend getting a flu shot. That’s because flu season typically ramps up in October, with peak season occurring between December and February. This year, a flu shot may not be the only vaccine that is recommended, however.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">In addition to an annual flu shot, it may be time to get another COVID-19 booster. An updated vaccine will be released this fall to provide protection against current strains of the virus that are circulating. Getting a COVID-19 booster may be especially important for older adults and those who are more at risk of complications from the virus.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Another vaccine that may be on your radar for the very first time is one that provides protection against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). This virus is usually associated with young children but adults may also get sick from RSV. Older adults are especially at risk of developing complications from the virus that can lead to hospitalization or even death.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Last year, all three of these viruses hit hard around the same time of the year—in the fall and winter. Some referred to the three viruses as a tripledemic. This year, health experts are concerned that the same thing may happen.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Who should get these vaccines?</strong></p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Not sure if you should get one, two or three of these vaccines? Here are recommendations for each:</p><ul style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px 0px 0px 40px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Flu</strong> – Annual flu vaccines are recommended for all people aged 6 months and older, unless there is a specific reason that a doctor suggests that you do not get vaccinated. Most people only need a single dose of the flu vaccine, but some children under age 9 may need a second dose. Getting the flu vaccine in September or October is ideal. If you miss that timeframe, it’s not too late to get a flu shot any time after that, since flu season usually sticks around until May.</li><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">COVID-19</strong> – New vaccines are being updated this fall to target the XBB variants of the COVID-19 virus. These are strains of the virus that came from the Omicron variant and are the most common form of the virus currently in circulation. This vaccine will be available to adults and children ages 6 months and older starting in late September or October.</li><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">RSV</strong> – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently endorsed recommendations for adults aged 60 and older to receive a single dose of the RSV vaccine. This is the first time an RSV vaccine has ever been available. Talk to your doctor about whether getting an RSV vaccine is right for you.</li></ul></div><div class="BWB_disclaimer" style="box-sizing: border-box !important; font-family: Poppins, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; letter-spacing: 0.5px;"><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; font-size: 11.2px !important; line-height: normal !important; margin-bottom: 0px !important; margin-left: 0px !important; margin-right: 0px !important; margin-top: 15.75px; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Copyright 2023 © <a href="https://www.baldwinpublishing.com/" style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; color: rgb(213, 43, 30) !important; float: none !important; font-size: 11.2px !important; line-height: normal !important; margin-bottom: 0px !important; margin-left: 0px !important; margin-right: 0px !important; margin-top: 2%; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;" target="_blank">Baldwin Publishing, Inc.</a> <a href="https://healthecooks.com/" style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; color: rgb(213, 43, 30) !important; float: none !important; font-size: 11.2px !important; line-height: normal !important; margin-bottom: 0px !important; margin-left: 0px !important; margin-right: 0px !important; margin-top: 2%; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;" target="_blank">Health eCooks</a>® is a registered trademark of Baldwin Publishing, Inc. Even feeling a lump, which is the most common symptom of breast cancer, may not be a reason to panic. Many breast lumps are not cancerous. These screenings are often effective at finding breast cancer before any symptoms appear. The earlier breast cancer is caught, the better the chance of being able to successfully treat it. Countless studies back up claims that regular physical activity can help improve almost every aspect of your physical health. From strengthening your heart to making it less likely you’ll develop serious diseases, you already have loads of good reasons to get moving.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Women may be happy to find out that there are advantages of exercising that go beyond the obvious well-touted health benefits. Working out increases blood flow to your skin, which helps skin regenerate collagen. This keeps your skin looking younger and firmer as you age.</li><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Improved memory</strong> – As more blood flows to the brain, it helps your brain perform better. It may take time to get used to a new prescription, so be especially careful during the transition.</li><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Hearing</strong> – A loss of hearing can make it harder for you to gauge what’s going on around you. This can make you more susceptible to falling due to unexpected dangers that creep up on you because you didn’t hear them. If you need a hearing aid, make sure it fits well and wear it.</li><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Medications</strong> – Some medications can make you lightheaded, weak, tired, confused or dizzy. If you experience these side effects, talk to your doctor. If you don’t take needed medication for certain conditions, you may also experience these symptoms, which increase your fall risk.</li><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Clothing and footwear</strong> – Wearing unsupportive shoes or shoes that don’t fit properly can make it more likely you’ll fall. Long, flowy clothing can also cause you to trip or may get caught on something as you walk by.</li><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Environment</strong> – Uneven sidewalks, loose rugs and other items in and out of your home may be tripping hazards. While you can’t control the conditions in public, you can make your home safer by not leaving things on the floor, wiping up spills immediately, securing rugs and installing grab bars.</li><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Inactivity</strong> – Regular exercise keeps you stronger and more flexible. Being active is one of the best ways to protect yourself from falls. Not only should you do weight-bearing exercises such as walking to keep your bones from getting weak, but it’s also a good idea to do balance, flexibility and strength training activities like yoga, tai chi and Pilates.</li><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Poor balance</strong> – Your balance and reflexes may not be as sharp as they used to be, making it more likely you’ll fall. The best way to improve your balance is by doing balance exercises and strength training. Also, keep your hands free when walking to help steady yourself and in case you need to grab onto something or someone.</li><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Health conditions</strong> – There are numerous health conditions that may increase your risk of falling. Diabetes or cardiovascular disease may lead to loss of feeling in your feet and legs, causing your balance to be off. Incontinence can cause you to rush to the bathroom, increasing the chance you’ll fall. Blood pressure issues may cause you to feel lightheaded when you get up. Cognitive impairment and dementia may increase your fall risk, too.</li><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><strong style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Distractions </strong>– Not paying attention to where you’re going or what you’re doing may be dangerous. Focus on what’s in front of you and don’t get caught up in looking at your phone or something off in the distance.</li></ol></div>Mayers - Always Caring...Always Herehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13866752536268899633noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2540625943141821955.post-4213767535911707532023-09-11T14:17:00.001-07:002023-09-11T14:17:00.169-07:00Are You Missing This Sign of Ovarian Cancer?<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhnpyhaE5WyM00BMyKHIg7YopC34Mm7Ugmxp5btrAdzo13tBoT1hO3WBhfyfoF2hqsAx9jaQkY3GqWJqCTRF9anXocG8T1ZWgi-4NhioHcYdBWmid3mSpcuJ_d1F7I03ezYlq_P2trD13j4sq2-smHQHMEzR-IouEtTGZ9DT_jYxmdw9ABpx_fheTkxMK95" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="1280" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhnpyhaE5WyM00BMyKHIg7YopC34Mm7Ugmxp5btrAdzo13tBoT1hO3WBhfyfoF2hqsAx9jaQkY3GqWJqCTRF9anXocG8T1ZWgi-4NhioHcYdBWmid3mSpcuJ_d1F7I03ezYlq_P2trD13j4sq2-smHQHMEzR-IouEtTGZ9DT_jYxmdw9ABpx_fheTkxMK95" width="320" /></a></div><p></p><div class="BWB_item_fulltext_h2" style="box-sizing: border-box !important; font-family: Poppins, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 19.2px !important; font-weight: bold !important; letter-spacing: 0.5px; margin: 24px 0px !important; text-align: justify !important;">If you often feel full quickly when eating, don’t ignore it.</div><p></p><div class="BWB_item_fulltext" style="box-sizing: border-box !important; font-family: Poppins, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; letter-spacing: 0.5px;"><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Ovarian cancer has often been referred to as the cancer that whispers. That’s because symptoms associated with the disease are typically subtle and can easily be mistaken for something else. Unfortunately, this causes approximately two-thirds of women who have ovarian cancer to be diagnosed at a late stage of the disease, when it is difficult to treat.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">One sign of ovarian cancer that many women may miss is a feeling of being full quickly when eating. Of course, this is a symptom that can easily be attributed to gastrointestinal issues and may be ignored. In addition to feeling full quickly, other subtle warning signs of ovarian cancer include:</p><ul style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px 0px 0px 40px !important; position: static !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;"><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Abdominal pain, bloating or swelling</li><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Loss of appetite</li><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Frequent urination</li><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Changes in bowel habits</li><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Pelvic discomfort</li><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Abnormal vaginal bleeding</li><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Back pain</li><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Unexplained fatigue</li><li style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; list-style: square !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">Unexplained weight loss</li></ul><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">It’s easy to see why many of these symptoms are often ignored or attributed to another cause.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">If you notice that you’ve been feeling full quickly even though you haven’t eaten much, or you have other symptoms of ovarian cancer, talk to your doctor. It may be hard to determine when these symptoms warrant a trip to a gynecologist and when you just need to lay off certain foods or change your diet. After all, you don’t want to be running to the doctor for every little thing that may seem “off” if it turns out to be nothing, but you also don’t want to miss a warning sign of a very serious disease.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">There aren’t routine screening tests for ovarian cancer, which makes it hard to easily identify the disease during its early stages. Since many people experience no symptoms at all or vague symptoms such as those listed above, it can be hard to know when someone should be screened for ovarian cancer. If there is cause for concern, your doctor may do an internal exam, as well as an ultrasound or CT scan. You may also be sent for blood tests to look for certain cancer markers.</p><p style="border: 0px !important; box-sizing: border-box !important; float: none !important; line-height: normal !important; margin: 16px 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; position: static !important; text-align: justify !important; vertical-align: baseline !important;">It’s understandable that many women don’t know when to be concerned enough about possible ovarian cancer symptoms to see a doctor. If you have a family history of ovarian cancer, err on the side of caution and get checked even if you’re not sure. If you have symptoms that persist and you haven’t found a valid explanation for them, it may also be a good idea to talk to your doctor or gynecologist about the possibility of whether your symptoms may be attributable to ovarian cancer.</p></div>Mayers - Always Caring...Always Herehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13866752536268899633noreply@blogger.com0
